What Is a Pocketless Pool Table? A Buyer's Guide to Carom Billiards

2 min read

If you searched "pocketless pool table" and landed here, you're probably picturing a pool table with no pockets, and that's exactly right. A pocketless pool table, more properly called a carom or three-cushion billiards table, is a different game entirely from the pool most people grew up playing.

What Makes It Different

A standard pool table has six pockets and uses fifteen numbered balls plus a cue ball. The goal is to sink balls into those pockets. A pocketless pool table strips all of that away. There are no pockets at all, just a clean, open playing surface with three balls, typically one red and two white (or yellow), used for carom shots.

The game itself is about precision, not pocketing. In carom billiards, you score points by making your cue ball contact both object balls in a single shot, sometimes bouncing off the rails (the "cushions" in three-cushion billiards) along the way. It's a game built on angles, spin, and touch rather than power and aim at a hole.

Why People Search for "Pocketless Pool Table"

Most people discover carom billiards without knowing its name. They've seen a table without pockets somewhere, a family member's game room, a European billiards hall, an old photo, and go looking for what it's called. If that's you, welcome. You've found the right game.

Why Choose a Pocketless Table for Your Home

Carom tables have been a niche in the U.S. for a long time, dominated by European manufacturers with long lead times and complicated service if anything ever breaks. That's part of why we started RAD Billiards.

The Alyse is our answer: an 8ft, American-made carom billiards table, built to order right here in Texas. Most carom tables are built to full tournament dimensions (9 to 12 feet), which simply doesn't fit in most homes. The Alyse is sized down without cutting corners on quality, real slate, correct cushion specs, tournament-grade construction, so it plays true in a space that actually fits your house.
